Week 4: Creating Your Departure Point

This week we read and reviewed chapters 14 - 16. We did the "Relax Into Greatness" meditation, which is yoga nidra (deep relaxation/"yogic sleep").  We did a quick 5 minute exercise of writing our individual sankalpas over and over and over again, to discover what other resistances (vikalpas) might be lurking in the background still. We chose a bad habit/time waster from our list to give up for the upcoming week. Each time we have the urge to partake in this bad habit/time waster, we will NOT do it, and instead mentally repeat our sankalpa to ourselves in place of it. This process is called "seeding the gap".

Next week's assignments:

Wed., Nov. 16th:  read Ch. 17 on your own for meet up; we will read and discuss chapters 18 and 19 together. We will do the "Accessing your Dhi" exercise , and the Healing the Heart meditation together on Wed. as well.

Thur., Nov. 17th:  read Ch. 20 on your own for the meet up; we will read and discuss chapters 21-23 together.  We will do the "Vairagya" exercise (parts 1 & 2), and the meditation to Increase Vairagya together on Thur.

We will not meet up the week of Thanksgiving.

Our last meet up will be on Wed., Nov. 30th!

Week 3: Vikalpa

No need to post/share your vikalpas...unless you wan to. But DO be sure you have done the exercises and taken the steps to identify your vikalpa(s); without this step, you will most likely remain unaware of the resistances that are standing in the way of you fulfilling your sankalpas. You can not weaken/lessen resistance if you do not know what the resistance is!

Week 4 assignment:

1/ Vikalpa Exercise (p. 146)
2/ Exercise: Listing Your Bad Habits (p. 154)...focus on bad habits that are mainly time wasters.
3/ Read Ch. 14-16

We will share our Vikalpas with each other at the meet up...but don't worry...we will not have to share the actual eulogies that we write for the Vikalpa exercise...so please feel comfortable to write as freely and honestly as possible in this exercise...for the most benefit.

We will do the Relax Into Greatness Meditation at the meet up this Wednesday, Nov. 9th.

Week 2: Sankalpa

We discussed ch. 8 & 9 this week, as well as reading ch. 10, doing the Bliss meditation, and Sankalpa exercise together.

Assignment for next week: finish Sankalpa exercise by drafting your Sankalpa. Read ch. 11 & 12 on your own. We will read ch. 13 together next week as well as do the meditation to increase Shakti. We will do the first part of the Vikalpa ex. And the ex. On listing bad habits together next week as well.

Reminder: we will meet on Thur., Nov. 3rd next week instead of Wed., Nov. 2nd...I will still be in PA on Wed. Hope this is not a problem for anyone. We will return to Wed meet ups the following week.

Any questions, comments, confusion about this assignment, please post in Comments section below.

Introduction

Ok, gals...here we go! Let me start by saying you will be soooooooo glad you participated in this, and I am so excited to be able to share the wisdom of this book with you!  Thanks for signing up to take this journey with me!

Secondly, please do not be frightened off by the first week's assignment.  It is the most amount of reading and the most time consuming exercise that you will do for the entirety of our book study.  It is about 60 pages of reading (easy reading), so if you start today, that's just 10 pages per day.  You can do that!! The journaling exercise says to allow 1 hour to complete it.  It took me 1 1/2 - 2 hours to complete I think.  But I am a long winded writer...as you can see.  Just giving you a heads up so you can plan for success accordingly.  In a way, this demanding first assignment is good, it will help us separate from the get go those of us who truly want and resolve to put in the hard work to reap the immense benefits of this book, from those who do not.  Which are you?

If you have not done it yet, BUY THE BOOK NOW! There really is no time to waste. Please do not put it off.  Your entire experience will be determined by what you choose to do at this moment. Choose wisely.  You can purchase the book at Barnes and Noble (that is where I got mine...only one copy in store though, so don't count on it), or you can go to Amazon.com or directly to Rod Stryker's (author's) website, parayoga.com .

As part of the book study we will also be practicing a different meditation from Rod's CD each week.  If you are interested in meditation, I would suggest purchasing the CD as well.  You can get a bundle deal if you buy both book and CD at same time on Rod's site. I am not sure if you get a deal on Amazon.

Lastly, if you cannot make all of the meet ups, no problem.  As long as you resolve to do the work and keep up each week with the readings and exercises on your own, I still feel you will have a wonderful experience.  If you cannot make any of the meet ups, but this all sounds really great, please buy the book, work at your own pace, and join us on this blog whenever you can to post any questions or comments you may have.

Here we go!!
